when i get the 996 and get it road registered i'll let you have a go and then you can tell me what you prefer mike

Non Ducati man ........ depends what you mean by that statement .... if you mean faggoty water-cooled things, well maybe so .......  the only one's I've owned were either Bevel's or early Pantah motored ..... let alone other wop V's by Guzzi & Morini (and even a Benelli four  )

When I bought the TL (5 years ago now), I was actually looking for an 888SPIII - V, but couldn't find one good enough. Then the reality of owning a Duke came back to me and the TL seemed a good compromise of V2 soul and japanese reliabilty (yes, I know the TL is flawed  ) I sold an 1170cc Kat that I'd had for about 13 years and an Exup RU I'd had for a couple of years before purchasing the TL, so had my choice really.

I could have had a 916/996 if I'd wanted, but in all honesty have never seen what it is that makes it such an acclaimed "style icon" - the 888 is a much nicer looker in my opinion  Wouldn't mind a go though .... Most 916's make 105 - 110 at the rear wheel, most 996's 115 - 120, My TL did 121 on the dynomap dyno with a downloaded map rather than a custom one. I will accept that there might be a few chassis issues though
Of all the things I have ever lost, I miss my mind the most .....

xbandit it think you'll find your wrong about servicing costs, it will be cheaper to service my 996 than my cbr600rr as the rr runs iridium plugs at £22 a go compared to £4 for the dukes, so £88 for a set of 4 or £8 and £40 for belts, all of a sudden running a ducati isnt as dear as you may think lol

you either love the sound of a duke or you dont, my old one sounded awesome when the slipper clucth was chattering away on down changes

moose im expecting my 996 ( when i get it) to be putting out around 130bhp depending on who's dyno it goes on as they all read differently.
got to agree with you on the 888 as it is a stunning looking bike, theres 1 in rpm ( plymouth) up for 2899, really nice bike not as nice as a 916 but a lot nicer than the 999 imo.

i think our italien fiends make some of the best looking bikes there are to day (999,749 not included) and the 1098 looks like it will be one of them
you know if thay got it right becouse thay will change the motor and other stuff but the shape will stay the same :)

ducati have made other bikes than v twins it was just a long long time ago
thay even made a v twin cruzer once

to be honist i love almost all italian bikes theres ust somthing about them
tho i like a mondial piga or one of the good bimotas
35 years on 2 wheels, 26 years on the road and always has a spanner in my hand

I love Italian bikes and having been to Bologna to see them hand-make Ducati's, I found out why they're so passionate about them and the sound they make. People don't necessarily buy them because they'll last forever, it's because they look so damn good and turn heads. Same with the Aprillia's and MV's.

But there are beautiful Japanese bikes. I'm with Moose on this one - the RC30 is a sight and sound to behold, and the manufacturing quality is second to none. Yamaha R1's, R6's and Honda's CBR600RR and 1000 versions mechanically sound due to people's perceptions nowadays of what a good bike should consist of.

i agree with you loris and if you read my earlier posts im sure i mentioned the rc30/35 but what about the ow01 or even the r7,the best jap bike 4 a while wasnt the quickest but i'd love 1 in the garage. the modern bikes just dont give out the same impression. was in sp today and they had a balck and white mv f4 312r and it was stunning, i could just put in the garage, pull it out onto the driveay and look at it as its that nice, you just dont get that reaction with a zx10 or a gsxr. they also have the £72,000 mv cc rep down for the paignton bike show and that looked amazing too, clad with carbon, titanium and magnesium parts, a well crafted beautiful machine

if any of you are in and raround exeter watch out for a 1098 that mike at m&p has just painted in the xerox factory colours,it looks absolutely gorgeous. i kind of prefer it to steves tricolor now but the 70mm termi system tahts on steves bike looks real mean.

loris how did you organise the bologna trip, its on my list of things to do and might try and go over in october for a visit.

Wow this topic really took off!

I love many many many bikes but Dukes just do something for me, especially the 1098. The new lower servicing costs and increased reliability make them even more attractive.

Anyone who knows me will tell you that I'm not a big fan of sports bikes at all yet the 1098 sends shivers down my spine. I sat on it and it feels awesome (apart from the far too low screen). I have posters of it on my wall  and if I had the money I'd buy one without hesitation.
