trackday - race tyres

Post by chris_1127 »

i've got a spare set of wheels and a pair of Dunlop KR racing tyres for the RD350 - just haveing second thoughts about using them for the trackday and wondering what peoples thoughts were?
Am I going to get enough heat into them on 20 minute sessions, or would I be better just sticking with the new BT45's that are on the standard wheels?

KR124's? used to be the tyre of choice for 18" wheels, used to use a 'wet' compound one on the front of my CR500 (not the wet KR144).

They do go off when left, used to replace mine at the beginning of each season as even though they felt soft, they just didn't grip the same.

How old are your's, have they been used, if unused how have they been stored?

They never used to be over expensive, is it worth getting a pair for the trackday & then to use on the road (they look more legal than some of the 'legal' trackday tyres now available - my old ones used to end up on the road).

Another tyre to consider is the Avons - AM22/23 I think?? various compounds available of the same tyre, again designed for 18" wheels, sort of modern version of the Dunlops.

I thnk theyre KR364's from memory - theyre in the shed though so will check later. They've been sat in my shed for about 8 months now, and I got them as partworn so not sure about their age - they feel a bit hard but I assumed this was just because they were cold, hence wondering how quick they would warm up.

Don't think anyone had any trouble warming up their tyres last year...

I thought mine were melting they were so hot...

Mind you it was a bleeding scorching hot day... 8)

If they feel hard then they're definately past their best; how much damage are you prepared to do to yourself & the bike for the sake of a pair of decent tyres?

Speedy - do your bit for the weather this afternoon, I'm off to Le Mans this evening!!

Ditto, I've got a pair of used tyres on the track bike that look like they've got one track day left in them, but to be honest, I'll be chuffed to buggery if I scratch my knee slider on the tarmac anyway!
