There are no plate change or colour change records associated with this

We have no mileage records for this bike. The guy selling it is known and he seems a good guy.
The guy who owns it is on this site. He said it has some damage due to a low speed slide and the bike has now been repaired and repainted but it is a cat D.
I am thinking i should walk away. However, if it is just damaged fairings than it is not a problem since they have been repaired.
Also, the finance seems a bit odd. I am going to contact Deutsch bank tomorrow about that.
If someone knows a bit more about Cat D that would be appreciated.

Amrik

If you have any doubt walk away !
Hard to sell on again mate.
If you ever sell it on again and someone does a check they will see that it's a Cat D writeoff as well.
But that said Cat D damage might not have been that much and as long as the repairs have been done right you have nothing to worry about.

* Category A - Vehicle must be crushed. All of it.
* Category B - Bike may not be returned to road. Parts may be sold.
* Category C - Repairable. Possibly structural damage. Cost of damage (at main dealer prices and labour rates) is more than book value of bike.
* Category D - Repairable. Probably non-structural damage. May have been economic to repair, but insurer doesn't want to.
* Category F - Damaged by fire.
* Category X - Repairable. Minor Damage.
As long as it's been repaired/replaced then it's normally fine, quite a few bikes are written off this way because new tanks/fairings etc normally cost way to much, plus most garages who do these quotes bump the prices and replace every single part even though it may not had even been damaged in the actual accident!. I've seen them replace little bolts with the tiniest scratch and those cost over £7!

Many insurance write offs are repairable as Gav says, alot of the time it's just cosmetic stuff that was broken and is replaceable it's just that garages have never heard of ebay and get brand new parts that cost the earth and make it more economical for the insurance company to pay out the money and bump up the person's premium.

Thanks for the input. I will check out the finance issue tomorrow but i am in two minds about this bike. I guess viewing it with a mechanic would be a good idea! The guy who is selling it seems legit. However, being a bike anything that has not be repaired correctly could cause a fatality.

As said above, a Cat D is generally a cosmetic write-off, rather than a smasshed to b*ggery jobbie - as long as the price you pay reflects this (bear in mind ease of re-sale) their isn't much to worry about.
With the finance thing - check with the lender. When we bought my wife's car (from a dealer
) we were told they HPI'd their cars and it was all clear. When we got all the paperwork with thesale documents the HPI said there was finance outstanding
On checking, the finance had been cleared, but they had not updated the records

Of all the things I have ever lost, I miss my mind the most .....

if your not entirely happy, walk away.
I personally wouldn't buy a cat D, because
1 - you dont know what happened in the accident, I would never be entirely satisfied that there isn't something like a crack in the frame lurking underneath waiting to go pop.
2 - when you come to sell you will have exactly the same problem of potential buyers asking exactly the same questions as you are.
3 - there is no shortage of decent SV's out there, if you look hard enough for long enough in enough places, you'll find someone desperate to sell that thing that sits in the garage doing 500 miles a year for bugger all money
you pays your money you...........................
