Roundabouts - general question

Post by Ricky_t »

Hi all,

I have another obscure question. Is it legal to continually go round and round a roundabout?

I have been using a roundabout that is in a national speed limit zone but I have gone round it about 20-30 times in one go. I haven't caused any delays to other road users and didn't exceed 60mph, actually I only just hit 55mph. Is this legal?

It is quite fun so I suspect not! Please give reasons.

I read about this somewhere some time ago in a bike mag and i think it was after a guy on a bike got pulled by the police for going round and round a roundabout like you do, the upshot was i believe the limit is twice before they think you are taking the mickey. Thats just what i remember it might not be correct...... :)

Generally the reason you do 'laps' of a roundabout is to get your knee down etc so I guess they could pull you for aggressive riding, not being in full control etc

Unless someone complains or you get unlucky, I'm sure sure you'll be fine doing a few laps. Warm up for the trackday is it? :)

Thank-you for the replies.

I better not do that anymore! The roundabout in question has another roundabout a short distance off it so I can do 2 laps of the large roundabout go to the small one turn around and then do 2 more laps and carry on. That way I will remain legal and improve my cornering!

I reckon your more likely to get a pull as to how your going round the roundabout than how many times, not too many coppers are going to sit there as you go round with the bike at 45 degrees and sparks coming off your knee sliders

Yeah to be honest if you see a copper approaching the roundabout then take a swift exit. Knee downing on the public highway will get you stopped if seen by an officer of the law.

Sounds rather like the paignton ring road.

I've heard maximum number is 2 laps.

Actually it was the roundabout in kingstaignton. The ring road roundabouts I found were too small

If you mean the one under the A380, you want to be VERY careful doing laps of that one ..... cars coming onto the roundabout from the Exeter direction have almost no forward visibility and reduced braking because of the steep descent they have just come down, likewaise vehicles from the Torquay direction often approach the roundabout faster than they think, and overshoot

I never go for it round that roundabout as the surface is starting to break up in several places and is leaving it a bit on the dodgy side but when they get round to resurfacing it as long as they don't do the tar and grit stuff then it will be a cracker :)

It may not be the best roundabout but I came back from teignmouth and made use of it! There is a strip about 3ft wide in towards the centre of the roundabout that is a good surface.

I will bear moose's comment in mind. Do you guys know of any large 60mph limit roundabouts near torbay? Not the ring road as they are too small and too used too frequently.
