link pipes

Post by chris_1127 »

just in case it's any use to anyone, I spoke with AMS in Paignton about getting a link pipe made up yesterday - they make up Powerflow exhausts on site so have all the gear for stainless tube work. Tube is £20 a metre and labour I think he said about 40 an hour so just to cut and bend the pipe he reckons probably about 30 quid - more if you want it all fitted.

Save-On tyres on Marsh barton do the same :D

Two things to watch though -

1. They use hydraulic push formers to make the bends rather than a mandrel bender, so you don't get a smooth, full diameter curve on the bend
2. The steel they use is 2.0mm thick, whereas most after market pipes are 1.2mm so you have to be carefull with the joins, especially with slip-on (rather than bolt-on) cans.

There's a chap at Cullompton who does them, using 1.5mm tube, and with a Mandrel bender. He did the pair of mine for about £40 8) i can PM his number if you wish

cheers moose that would be great - think it was save on tyres that did my car exhaust a few years ago. Had a go at forming one myself in 1.5mm mild steel on a hydraulic push bender and ended up with something that looked like one of those micron serpent downpipes

is the cullompton guy something to do with the italian superbike centre or somewhere called something like that? do seem to recall getting a quote for a full system for my 650 kat from somewhere in cullompton a few years ago

There used to be a couple of places there, I had a stainless Harris Works replica pipe made up for my Kat by a company called Pipers many years ago, but they went bust a few years back. This place makes high-end stainless systems for Ferraris, Porsche's, etc., mainly for the German market - their system for a Porsche 996 is a sight to see - and their foreman does a few little bits on the side ..... They are just off the M5 on that estate towards the paper mill :D
