I just need it to do the usual stuff like photo and video editing, internet and the kids homework. Not online gaming. If not what do i need to look for. Last time I brought one I just got a pentium 4, 3ghz laptop cos that was very high spec then, But it was about 4 years ago and I brought it in spain so it was a lot cheaper

The first one doesnt look bad as it comes with 2gigs of ram which is pretty much a minimum these days, i would definately go for the graphics card upgrade to the 8500gt for an additional £38 which is a bargain and it comes with an operating system. The second one i am not so sure about, there seems to be a bit of bullshitting going on with regard to the processor as the AMD x2 4800 dual core is normally 2x2400 processors giving 4800 which is not as fast as a 9600 processor as they advertise and that system doesnt come with an operating system preinstalled so you have to add in the cost of windows as well. Just my thoughts
Thats just marketing talk. Old AMD speed ratings compared to old P4's back in the day when an AMD 1.xGhz was as fast as a P4 2.xGHz. So AMD started using speed ratings so a 1.6Ghz AMD would be a 2400+
E.g. I have a AMD 6400+ which runs at 3.2Ghz, Its a dual core so some muppets say 2x3.2Ghz or even 6.4Ghz, hell maybe even 12800 if you are a complete retard.
Only worry about the extra graphics card if you plan on playing newish games. It wont make any difference around windows. Also the first one states it includes WinXP and Office, I'd be quite surprised if it actually includes legit versions.
My brother builds and repaires computers I'll get him to check those specs over for you if you want and see if he can offer a better price or better machine for your needs. at least if you where to get one through him yu can rest assured that SHOULD there be any problems it would be soarted verry quickly at no cost to you. At the same time he will allso let me know if there is a better deal on e-bay then what he can do minnus the affter sale.
Dynamight, Yep thats about where they lost me. My laptop saays P4 3 Ghz and thats what it is. Now like you say they twist the ratings around so much just to suit the advert.
I need a new one as the kids comp was the old celeron and it just wont do what they need it to do so they keep using mine.

I think probably it will be the oem version, the sort of stuff you get if you are daft enough to buy from Comet, Currys, PC world etc, they very rarely come with windows discs, office discs and all the other discs needed for a format and reinstall. Usually its just a rescue disc which when you insert reverts your PC back to the factory install so its as good as the day you bought it, easy to spot as there is usually a small partition on the PC with all the setup progs on and the disc you insert just activates it which is why you should never format the whole disc on these PC's as you could delete that partition and lose your install. problem with these setups is that it goes back to the original drivers so you have to update all your drivers again but then again most people will probably not update their drivers on a regular basis anyway
Both specs look good, especially for those prices!! Remember now the Quad core processors are becoming more popular especially with the prices coming down! I would personally be unable to match those prices, (looking about £100 more) but warranty and support/advice would be provided and from someone you know rather than a name from the net so weighing up the cheap price vs helpful/personal support is a must!!

you get motherboard,ram, processor,cooler and fan all assembled and tested so all you need to do is remove your old one and plug in the new one in your existing case. Only thing you might have to do is move the little supports for the motherboard if its a different layout, but often it can be the same so its a cheap way to upgrade and one i have used for a few years now. Windows may not like it becasue of the hardware changes but you just have to validate it again over the internet..........

How do you mean? If you mean software that actually utilises the quad core architecture (ie allocating a core to a particular application) then there probs isn't, but then again there isnt really anything that utilises both cores of a dual!
But there are fixes out there at the moment from both microsoft and AMD that force a dual core processor to use both processors at the same time rather than utilise one until its nearly maxed before utilising the other one.....
