What a plonker i am

Post by Blimey »

Stripped the RR yesterday morning 6am to be precise as i had a busy day ahead of me and needed new rubber for the rear and balance the front and wasn't going to be able to finish bike untill the Sunday (being today). Left the oil draining as i was changing this

So spent all day on bike.

New Discs (they look sooo sweat, will post pics at some point)

New Pads and unseize sticky calipers.

New Fork Seals (1st one a pain the 2nd did with my eyes closed)

New Oil filter

Break to watch MOTOGP and 3 ltrs of cider later.

Put bike back together and a little clean then thought oh i must put new oil in.

Ummmmm where did i put the new oil ??

Did i buy new oil ??

No i bleeding didn't

Dickh*ad alert.

So bike is sat in garage and i am being moaned at as i need to take car to work tomorrow. Just go to Halfords for oil i heard her say. I don't think so. Not sure they will have anything like i like to put in my baby

What a knobber

What oil do you put in it :? You might be surprised by the oils they do carry - even if you just put it in to be able to use the bike for work and change it again once you get what you want :?

Don't forget you can't use car oil in a bike cos of the wet clutch.

really ? you'd better tell that to every bike I've ever owned ........ except my Ducati Darmah which was run on a very specific single grade oil as recommended especially for the bevel drive at vast expense ........ and that blew its big ends twice in three years  change to a 10/40 car oil and all was fine for another two years ('til it did it yet again    )

A lot of rubbish is talked about oil, but the one constant is that it's not the cost / type of oil used, as much as the frequency with which it is changed. A cheap oil changed at half interval will provide more protection than the most expensive at double the time ...... In the past I've used a cheapish car oil (Comma Eurolite 10/40) and changed at 2000 mile intervals with pattern filters. As my mileage has dropped, I now use a mid-price castrol oil and change it when I think of it or do something that nudges me ... but that often means around 1500 miles or so, and on occasions maybe even just a few hundred.

Look at the back of the can - as long as it meets the minimum spec of the bike you can't go far wrong ... I think SH or SJ are the latest standards :?

The one thing I would agree with is to avoid fully synthetics unless they are bike specific as they do seem to give wet clutches trouble :D Amd I would also qualify the above by saying for road bikes rather than track machines ....

Mark I have two things to say:

You're a forgetful knobber (in your old age)

and

You're a snob for not going halfords.

Haha take that. Now I have destroyed your personality I'm going to buy arms for my monkey army.

i kinda agree with moose ont he oil situation,my bmw has to use castrol edge longlife and gets serviced every 20k but what castrol dont tell you is that you can use a lower spec oil and change oil n filters regularly.

halfords do have a good range but if halfords were open why did you not try bridge or cms as surely halfords close the same time as those two

p.s. did your manual help

I've heard of some strange things, but what a "Halfords Semi" Is this something you should be discussing with Kelly rather than sharing on a web forum

Ok thanks for all the DOH comments

It was getting on and CMS don't open Sundays. Could of gone for many types of oil really and Halfords i am sure stock that Castrol R4 or something like that.

I never go for a fully Synthetic oil but norm use Silkoline comp 4 10/40 semi.

Comments on oil types and expense are right to a certain degree. You do tend to pay for the name.

I always recommend and do is change oil and filter very 6000 miles or 12 months. "Car or Bike" and this is for a good decent oil.

Oh and manual worked wonders thankyou, i highly recommend Haynes to anyone
