Whats the point of riding on the roads anymore?
Seriously,
What is the point?
Its so gash. Whether on a 1098, NC30, R1 or Supermotard..... What is the point?
Roads conditions are crap, risk of diesel, police, total newbie bikers on the road that do not know how to ride....
most corners you can not see round, the smooth roads are all straight and full of traffic, all decent corners are super slow....
I remember grinding pegs out everytime on the 400, Got knee down 10 times on the duke and they were virtually all abroad.
Even my fav road of 5 years has now been raped by slower speed limits and more caravans. And with the rising population, its only going to get worse.
Everytime I go out, it just seems pointless in owning a bike over 60+bhp.
Anything over 100mph is ban, loss of job for most and thats in redline in 1st for most 1 litre sports bikes.....
With mates, the spark has still gone....only fun to have is wheely competitions(not exactly the safest of options) and those are rare(unless on the m5).
I now need 3 hands to count the number of bike funerals I have attended over the last 10+ years. what a joke.less than half down to rider error.
Man,riding on English roads certainly does suck at the moment.

Re: Whats the point of riding on the roads anymore?
I was thinking the same thing lately but i think its just the winter blues in my case
If i had the time and finances to have a track bike and get a load of trackdays in every year,i would...unfortunately i can barely afford one road bike at the moment.

Re: Whats the point of riding on the roads anymore?
Roads are still pretty empty and reasonably police (though admittedly not camera) free if you make the effort to either get up early enough or go to the right places .......
I am obviously luckier (?) than you with the people I ride with, and don't think I'm off one hand for the deaths of friends in bike accidents (in what is now 25yrs of riding)
I agree re. road surfaces, many of the best bike roads have been allowed to deteriorate to quite a poor state ... but I also think on some roads thats also used as a deterent to keep speeds down
Once they justify roads being at a slower speed, they have an excuse to lower the speed limit ..... once the speed limit is lower the maintenance requirement reduces .... catch 22
In relation to the need for more than 60bhp, you're probably right though it helps me get up the hills
It is still nice to get out on a sunny day morning though, and riding a bike is still a damn sight less stressfull/hassle than sitting in a car
As for the issues with the above specifically in relation to this country v. others, well there's two choices - put up with it or vote with your feet and go elsewhere
In fairness, in my experience, where other european countries have roads as heavily used as ours they are generally in as poor condition ..... and many rural roads can be no more than gravel unless the relevant country has received some chunky grants from the euro-fund ...... I was quite impressed with many roads in Portugal this year but the decent ones generally had a "part funded by EEC..." sign along it - perhaps our councils should start looking for the same grants

Of all the things I have ever lost, I miss my mind the most .....

Trackdays and riding abroad is the only answer.
I remember when back from Europe, poor condition of the roads here in Sunny England was the first part I noticed.
As finance is made easier and 0% APR deals going on everywhere, it encourages idiots to go straight for bigger bikes with no experience and its not long till they have an "off", hopefully not killing anyone else.
Merv, you have bigger balls than me. I would have more fun singing "Allah Akbar" through Heathrow with a rucksack on.

I find this is true aswell. Ive got fed up with riding through Exeter on my bike now. Every time theres some idiot who blocks you purposely when filtering etc. Im actually considering selling my bike as its just £2500 sitting in the garage.
For the last 3 weeks ive driven my car to college. Dont hate me but if you cant beat them you may as well join them

Every time I get off my Bike I have a smile on my face, well nearly every time
Re: Whats the point of riding on the roads anymore?
I'm out & about most days on the bike & I still get a grin on my face, & that's after 40+ years of riding.
It's just a great way to travel & gives me a real buzz.
You could almost say it's better than sex, at least the ride last's a damn sight longer

Re: Whats the point of riding on the roads anymore?
I haven't been able to ride for the last three months since my accident, but I have started again this week. Whilst I agree with Ed's comments about the shite state of our roads and some of the absolute numpties on them, I have to say it's great to be riding again.
Why ride on the roads? Because it's still one hundred million times better than being stuck behind some [Censored] fucktard doing 30mph along a national limit road that you can't overtake because you're in a car. It's happened to me on the way to work every morning for the last three months, and I just can't describe how good it is to just wind it up and bugger off past them again rather than joining the back of the queue behind them and going insane!!
I didn't realise how much I missed it until I got back on
