in 2 weeks time, I was in the exact same position 6 years ago when I was 17.

I was thinking 600 all the way but a mate said 400cc which i knew nothing of at the time as they are old and not so "kool" as 600s. Getting a 400cc over a 600cc bike saved me ££££s on the bike itself and insurance and was the best decision I have made in my short but sweet biking career.

I loved my 400 so much that I sold my 99 Fireblade to get another NC30 again as I missed the fun factor.

Great learner bikes, comfortable enough and I'm 6ft 4 and at your age was probably the same weight.

As soon as funds allow it mate, ducati

At the risk of sounding dull and boring, won't you be on a restricted power output as some of your early posts you were riding a 125 and hadn't passed your test yet? If you have, well done, sorry I missed it!
Back to the point tho, from what you're asking for it sounds like you're a bit nervous of the power available on a supersports 600, hence you want one with sensible road manners, i know they don't look as cool ( depending on your opinion mind) as nakeds or sports commuters, but I really think you might want to seriously consider one. Any sports orientated 600 ( or even a good 400) is going to be a lot quicker on acceleration, mid range and top end than the 125 you've been used to. You say you don't like the riding position of the SV650, what about the fully faired ' sport' option, thats got the lower handle bar position similar to a supersports, but still with a very managable power spread.
Once you've spent a year or so on a more managable bike then you can trade in and step up to a more powerful supersports with confidence and hopefully more knowledge of what you really want from a bike, not what you think you want from magazines and far too many conflicting personal opinions.

Thats just my humble opinion, feel free to ignore it or take the piss whichever you feel it merits  !
Cut me in half and I'v got Suzuki written right through me!
Ride GSXR 750 WR ( 1994) .

I know that what you are saying is right, its better get more experience and then go up the ladder ( bigger bike not ladder in the garage :D ) but i dont like v2 sound either and i know my self i wount be happy if i buy anything else i need to see for my self mayby i will buy supersport and sell it ( or bin it) after 2 weeks i dont know. I prefer to shit my pants for a first time and be very careful, i just prefer it that way dont want to come too overconfident from sv650 and then wipe my *** in first bend. What i love about ss is feel, look, sound of IL4 but a bit "lets be honest Scared" about the power but i will be fine, im just afraid that i wount be able to even turn my hand 2cm without going 120mph or on the back wheel :p

i think a 400 would be perfect for u i had a nc30 and tuned it up and was happy with that and in fact after everything i done to it, it kept up with some of the 600's on the road. and if u aint gonna feel confidant on a 600 id play it safe cuz u dont wanna pay all that money and drop it or lose control if ur nervous.

Sorry, but I don't quite understand your logic.

You keep telling yourself that you can't handle a 600 sports, yet you won't take any advice to get something other than one???

I know if I had got something more powerfull than the Diversion for my first big bike, I would probably of crashed it big style and seriously hurt myself. I still managed to crash 3 times in my first year on it, none too seriously though.
So what have I lost by recking that bike, 450 quid for the bike + 700 for insurance. What have I learned? How to respect and ride a bike.

Seriously just buy something cheap. 50-80 maybe 90 bhp around a grand to cut your teeth on, don't spend 4/5 grand on your first big bike, not trying to sound negative but you will more than likely crash/drop it. Then you have a big repair bill for fairings, at around 300 quid a panel at a guess.
Especially in your mindset get a bandit/sv/fazer/hornet or a 400, forget about how it looks/rides/sounds. Drop it, crash it whatever its only a grand or so then buy a bike you can be proud of when you have more experience.

And don't be scared of buying an older bike, my 1996 diversion with 56k on the clock hasn't given me a single problem in 11 months, 15k of abuse and lack of maintance.

Take a Thundercat for a test ride, it's great on the road, especially with the state of some of the roads around here, and it's got 100bhp so will be plenty quick enough. Riding position is more sporty than something like an SV, but is still pretty comfy (and i'm 6'4"). Insurance is pretty reasonable too

Thundercat sounds a good idea, forgot about that.

User friendly, reliable, quick enough....

But you do sound like me when I was your age, a [Censored] idiot

Mate its your money so do whatever.

The rule is you always drop your first big bike and it does happen 99% of the time so you either get your insurance to cough up which will obviously rise the next time you insure anything or pay for the damage yourself which will be 3 times more than repairing an older bike.

No point asking for help if you blank it.

when your looking at used bikes - the condition of the bike and mileage will be more important than what model you get - get the cleanest lowest mileage newest one you can get will almost always be the best option...
