Torbay M/c's. Recommended.

Post by VTR »

A few weeks ago the VFR was getting close to the 32k miles mark & requiring a service...... one of the bigger ones that entails checking/adjusting the valve clearances. Usually I'm quite happy to get stuck in & do it myself, but I've been quite busy of late & thought about getting a dealer to do the valve clearances & I'd do everything else. So I fired off a few e-mails to a few dealers to get quotes. In the end I decided to go with Torbay Motorcycles in Newton Abbot as they were reasonable on price, would also set up the Fi included in the work, would supply me with a courtesy bike as part of the cost & because my working hours made getting the bike to them difficult they would work around what was best for me. Unlike Bridge m/c's who wanted twice as much to do the job & an extra charge for a courtesy bike!!!

Anyway, I took the VFR over on Thursday evening & was given an 08 plate CBF600 to get me home, which is a great little bike. Returned yesterday (Friday) & collected the VFR. Work has definitely been carried out on the bike as it's obvious that the cam covers have been off & the Fi seems to be a bit smoother. The mechanic was more than happy to discuss with me what he'd done, in fact I was encouraged to have a chat with him by the owner of Torbay M/c's before I left.

So, if you're looking for a place to get your bike serviced at a reasonable price, by a mechanic who shows a genuine interest in his work/the bike & an excellent customer service then I have no problem in recommending Torbay M/c's.

He may not have been as happy to talk about it if you had one of the newer V-Tech models.

I've heard that the shim service on these is a nightmare, even for a competant Honda trained mechanic and the average bill is between £600-£800

It has to be done every 16,000 miles

Kevins been offering service like that for the 3years I've known him, tbh I'm suprised he hasn't had more praise on here. His customers are usually more mature than most of the peeps on here lol

Thats why i'm struggling to find someone to take my GPZ to, to get a few jobs done before i start stripping it down, cam chain rattling, head gasket leaking a bit of oil, valve clearances and another oil leak from the bottom of the engine but want it done before i strip the rest down so i know its all good when i put it back together, its not easy finding someone to trust with your pride and joy who won't charge top dollar labour for crap service.........

I've worked me way through 1 dealer and 3 garages that I now dont trust in Plymouth, from crappy/dangerous work.

Got a service booked in on the ZX7R at MSC in Plympton next week. He did a great job when he changed me sprockets over, so going back for the full service.
