Hehehehehe..! Are you really going to spend a week researching long distance haulage driving???? Haven't you got better things to be doing?Stately wrote:I'm on a mission now.
I'm going to spend the next week becoming an expert on long distance haulage, and will be sure to post up my findings on here![]()
So, just to be clear.
You are saying that a 22 year old long distance lorry driver is not uncommon ?

Re: How long have you been riding
Dunno about that either m8, the pay is generally crap, the conditions unless you are driving a new truck are atrocious, the hours are long and the life is hard, been there done it, woken up outside some factory gates at 7 in the morning in winter in the pissing rain and have to unload the truck, no wash, no breakfast nothing, its the pits. Drive from Wales to Aberdeen 10 hours solid at 56mph and still be two hours short of your destination when you run out of driving hours and have to spend the night in some truckstop with overpriced food and cold showers and pay £8 for the privilige. Nearly every driver in my last long haul job would have got out if they could but its the same old thing, they are qualified for nothing else, the only ones that enjoyed it were those who had a bad homelife and it was a relief to be away all week. According to one haulage association website there is a shortage of 15,000 drivers nationwide with people retiring faster than they can train them so in theory it will become easier for younger drivers to get a job driving trucks............Stately wrote:Apparently, long distance haulage is the holy grail for HGV drivers, and no one get's in untill they've had many years of local driving experience.

Re: How long have you been riding
I don't think i will find that i am wrong because i have got the insurance policy in front of me and its my business to know how young a driver i can employ. All my company stipulates is that under the age of 24 they are regarded as a 'young or inexperienced driver' and therefore attract a higher policy excess but there is no restriction on the use of a driver this age. I would much rather use a younger driver trained by myself on my truck as i know he or she would be trained to do the job correctly rather than a driver with perhaps 10 yrs experience aged 35 who thinks he or she knows it all.Stately wrote:

I am saying that without a doubt there will be 22 year old long distance lorry drivers on the road, as for whether its common or not, then i don't know because i don't employ them all. Its not actually the distance involved that makes it a hard job to do its the size of the vehicle. A 22 year old driver could be driving a 7.5tonne HGV from London to Aberdeen which is long distance on the other hand we have a 25 year old girl who drives a cement tanker which weighs in excess of 42 tonnes and each journey is around 100 miles each way and no i don't know how long she has been driving it.
You might want to take a look at this site here:
http://www.skillsforlogistics.org/en/in ... ining/yds/
This scheme is providing young people with a HGV licence at 18 and a class 1(C+E) by the time they are twenty one so they could have three years experience driving rigid HGV's long distance by the time they are 21..............

I am fully aware that 22 years old is an age at which a driver can qualify, and work in the industry.
What I'm questioning is weather or not a company would employ drivers at such a young age for this kind of work, but hey, I don;t know but you can be sure that by the end of next week I will because I'm going to be doing a lot of research on this
