Piaggio NRG....Help!

My lad is driving me mad!!! He has a Piaggio NRG which pulls away quickly but seems to change into the higher gear too early and his mates leave him standing. He needs a long straight to catch them. We put in lighter rollers (6g) which had little effect other than to slow the top speed down.

It has had the washer removed from the variator and the previous owner cut and welded a pipe on the exhaust.

Any Suggestions

Could be that the width of the drive belt has worn to thin.

It can normally be put down to 2 things as to why its running slow.

1. As you have said, the variation rollers.

or

2. A clogged up exhaust pipe. Even thou an exhaust may still look good from the outside, with the 2 stroke mixure they tend to clog up badly on the inside. A quick anwser to tell you, is take off the exhaust and run it the and see if this improves its performance, if it does, you know the exhaust is clogged up. (You may want to wear ear defenders)

Failing that, I have a engine sat in my garage

Thanks Speedy......if the exhaust is blocked can it be flushed through or is it a bin job. I did notice there is a small pipe from the exhaust, which seems to feed back into the carb and was very oily. The lad loves the idea of driving without an exhaust...

yes they can be cleaned through, but it ain't pretty

You can used oxy accetalean to. But make sure it's in a well vetalated area

Thanks Dave.......there is so much bull on the 'scooter' forums you could spend a fortune and be no better off. Its a shame there is no professional advise....just kids with opinions.

Ooh yeah...um, i reckon its your power bands need replacing...try the blue ones,they make you go faster!

Failing that just take the engine out, less weight=faster bike!

yeah taffspeed have a good reputation and theres a scooter guy in tavistock whos pretty good too, simons his name but i cant remember his business name. he specialises in custom made race systems for vespas n lambrettas and has his own dyno for tuning them on
