Advice on how to kill and get rid of IVY

Post by Blimey »

Got a massive Ivy growth in my garden and its getting well out of control.

Managed to track down 3 major roots to it but they are coming from under a concrete path and doing some damage mostly from the neighbours side but on our border.

How do i kill and permently get rid of this stuff anyone know please ???

The prob i have found with it already is it just reroots itself and starts growing again and i can't get to the base of the root as its buried under concrete.

Knock about 10 reasonably sized copper nails were it protrudes from the concrete. Or another way is to drill some holes into it and fill them with copper sulphate then plug up the holes.

Those are two ways ive heard of killing it succesfully, worth a go!

Get some strong weed killer (look for a high % glyphosate) and use it like paint ... make some cuts on the stems and paint into those cuts and also put it on the leaves. It takes time (weeks) to really start to work, in the meantime cut back the rest of the ivy (especially the leaves) to stop it getting stronger again. You'll probably have to do it two or three times to really kill it.

Alternatively you could choose the more eco-friendly option ... get a goat
my mind not only wanders ... sometimes it leaves completely

1. Stop hanging around 'certain areas'
2. Wash
3. See doctor for cream

Now this is proper Off Topic banter :D

This is the stuff of what seperates the good sites from the real brilliant ones! 8)

I don't have the copper nails but I do have plenty of 1p & 2p coins... I know they're Cupro/Nickle but if I cut slots in the stems and slide coins in, will that do the the same trick?

Cheers all, heard a few people mention the old copper nail trick so deffo going to give it a go, also been out and bought some weed killer containing glyphosate (thanks Jak) this stuff apparently kills tree stumps so fingers crossed.

Who ever plants this stuff needs shooting
