Scrappage scheme for bikes is a waste of time and money. It will ruin the 2nd hand market which is already suffering from 0% finance deals on new bikes, as it has done with cars, effectively removing cheap cars from the market place. The discounted amount will be not much different to the deals that are currently on offer. 0% finance deals have had a knock on effect on 2nd hand prices, which impacts on everybody. Those looking to buy a new bike will shop around at the various deals and incentives regardless of whether they have an old shitter to trade in. Most trading up to a new model will have bikes that far exceed the value available from scrappage. It may benefit some of the dealerships, but it ill not improve things for the majority of owners. Although new sales are down by 20% against the previous year, many of these are due to the lessened importation of cheap shit from china which has reduced manufacturing capacity and therefore exports to the UK, critically the 50cc market has seen the largest fall compared to other sectors, which is usually buoyed by scooter/moped sales of cheap chinse imports.
Personally nobody I have spoken to in the trade other than a couple of dealerships are in support, certainly not the smaller independent bikshops.
