Does it sound like my carbs are out of balance?

Post by Ricky_t »

Hi all,

I have a 1999 sv650s. Recently, I have found that there is a hesitation for about 0.5 seconds whilst riding before acceleration. There is less power/torque in the midrange and the bike generally feels not fun to ride. The carbs were last balanced in December.

I have checked the airbox just in case it was leaking and I have ordered a carbtune.

Does midrange hesitation sound like unbalanced carbs?

Thanks

depends how much you have been riding it.

if it's been stood around for a few months it's probs crap fuel and shite in the fuel system. give it a run and put some decent fuel in it. failing that, won't hurt to balance them

A slight hesitation could be a number of things, even the throttle cable needing adjustment.

I have now balanced by carbs that were only slightly out of balance. The response is much better but still not quite right. I am doing to lube the throttle cables now and see if that sorts the problem out.

Check how tight/slack they are too and compare to what your manual states.

Actually I have sorted that problem out but think it is the carbs again or an air leak. The cables are fine now.

Totally sorted now. Thanks for assistance!

It was a crankcase breather pipe that was disconnected.

Well at least I know now that my throttle cables are all lubed and my carbs are perfectly balanced!

I can now disassemble bike and balance carbs within 60seconds, no joke!

It was a crankcase breather pipe that was disconnected.............

I fail to see what that has to do with anything - unless you are saying it was crimped or blocked :? The crankcase breather pipe is exactly what it's name suggests - and would make no difference whatsoever to the running of the bike if it was removed completely (unless out in the rain and water was able to enter the cases  )

Far more likely that the bike has cleared itself with a bit of use, after being sat for such a period

If the crankcase breather pipe was not connected it will let more air into the airbox making the mixture more lean.

Well whatever the problem was (carbs, throttle cables, breather pipe, air filter) I no longer have it so I am happy. :D :D

I wish I could but my uni starts next week with revision for exams in June (same time as Llandow.) Then I should have my work placement finalised and that starts from June until September and that could be offshore or near Hull. Basically after this week I have no time off until beginning of September. :(

Actually, it was my choke plungers sticking on the bike!

It has been sorted now with help of Zip motorcycles in Torquay. Took my carbs into them since I couldn't get the screw out without damaging the heads. Suzuki use a lot of cheese on there bolts!

Thoroughly happy that the bike is back to its full power.
