HELP!!!!! before i set fire to it

Post by GIXXER KID »

welll, where do i start,

my gsxr1100 needed some work, heres a list

-new front tyre
-new forks
-new clutch
-new chain and sprockets
-a paint job
-new brake pads
-cam chain tensioner

well id been saving and slowly working on it,

6weeks ago i bought forks (200 notes), didnt have the cash to get a front paddock stand and fit them though,
today after allot of saving i got a new barnett performance clutch (170 quid) and paid to have it fitted (80 quid),
whilst this has been being done i was working on my panels, had all the fairing off so bike looked like a street fighter (give you an idea). so, went to collect my bike from the workshop, paid the guy and bought a paddock stand. wooooo new forks to fit :D, soo off i went riding home on my stripped down gsxr.

got home to find my steering damper had gone through my radiator!!!!! balls, my mistake for forgetting it was still bolted to the bottom yoke , so thought buggar owell it can be welded. So off i go fitting my forks, strip the whole front end, in with new fork leg number one......ohh shit :!: it doesnt fit!! the forks i purchased off ebay arent the correct ones :(
so over all having a shit day, 200 quid wasted on forks, a whole in my radiator and a new clutch i cant do anything with,
guyssss, what do i do? keep throughing money at it and hope eventually it gets there, or say [censored] this and sell it for what i can :( .
was only doing all the work ready to sell her for an R1 so dont wanna be pouring loads into it.
and to top everything off had a massive fall out with the gf and cnt see tht lasting much longer, man im wishing i hadnt sold my xbox :(,
peace out guys, from a very stressed out adam

You can get a refund for the forks on ebay if the seller accepts refunds. If they were advertised as fitting you can always make a complaint to them to sort it out if the seller doesn't refund
At least the clutch is money well spent...

Bin the gf off if she is causing hassle, you're still young.

Forks can be sorted, let me know what the diameter at both upper and lower yoke is and I'll tell you which model they're from, also what spindle diameter is it. You will be able to have the lower yoke bored if the difference is only 2mm and the top fits. Look on ebay for a rad there are loads out there from people. What is wrong with your original forks? a new set of stanchions from ABE would cost less than 200 quid and they'll fit them onto your bottoms if you send them up there.

the new forks ive bought are to small for the yokes, the bottom clamp is the wrong size and the stantions are slightly wider, my old forks have huge scores in them and have been dumping the oil out all over my brakes :/

I'm not sure if the dimensions are the same, nor the springing or wheel travel, but I have a pair to TL1000s forks sat propping up a shelf in the garage ....... had new seals and oil about 500 miles before they were swapped out for some "Maxton" ones (2yrs ago) .....
Of all the things I have ever lost, I miss my mind the most .....

If the fork upper is smaller than the clamp of the yoke then it is a simple matter of having some shims macined to sit inside the yoke clamp, they have a small brim to stop them sliding through, I've used this method when forks and yokes have been slightly different. Alternatively if both sets of forks have the same diameter stanchion it is a simple matter to fit the stanchions into the other uppers, I have done this to convert GSXR1000K2 uppers with GSXR1000K4 stanchions, and have just used the set of K2 gold stanchions on a set of GSXR1000K8 uppers and screwed them into the K8 caliper mounts as I had them left over and needed a pair of stanchions for the K8 forks. GSXR stuff of all ages is pretty interchangable if the stanchion diameters are the same. I have the specialist tools for stripping USD forks, so if you get stuck you can always bring them up to me to be sorted out.

I would say perservere, this is the stuff heroic pub legends are made of :D ! Biggest problem I can see is you really want an R1 and can't really be bothered with chucking time and expense at the thing, understandable under the cicumstances, but will you get enough back if you sell it as is? Probably not. Have a measure up and consider shims on the forks, it won't cost a lot more than you've already spent and should enhance the value at selling time.

Otherwise put an ad in the paper, get it as tidy as poss, give it a couple of weeks and if no interest, do the forks and it won't feel like such a waste of time.

Also try oldschoolsuzuki web site and see if ne one wants to swap?
