In my exoerience, there is no such thing as a cheap MOT. All the 'cheap' ones I've had have managed to find problems that needed more money spending on work and parts, where as the traditional older garages charging normal rates have passed the cars/bikes with little or no work needed. Perhaps I'm being cynical?

i had a friend that used to work doing MOTs for a car comapny that advertised 'we pick your car up, MOT and drop it back for £40' and he said they used to get told to 'find faults that needed fixing, whatever'. IE, if no work needed, make something up!

Not implying that's the case here btw! Don't want a slander case on my hands! lol I just question how, in these times, a garage can afford to do such cheap MOTs...

Well i gotta say there is such a thing.
I took my bike down to Jamie at Bikeworx last week for mot,and he asked me if i was in swb, when i said yes he dropped the price down to £25,and i had no work done to the bike.
I will go to him from now on for anything to do with my bike, especially after my last experiance with a certain main dealer on marsh barton that was blatantly trying to rip me off!!

I think you are being a bit cynical,
1, this guy is small village bike shop that does not want too upset his customer base, he is a long way from anywhere really, and is very likely trying to get more customers, so things like that would not help him,
2, if a mot shop fails any vehicle then you have the option to take it elsewhere for a second opinion,
3 if you get an advisory that is not a fail you have the option of fixing it yourself , or taking getting it done before the next mot, the place where i get my bikes done will show me exactly what is wrong if anything, down too even giving me a spring washer and split pin to put in my rear brake stay when he spotted one was missing,
and if you really feel you have been ripped off or forced into unnecessary work you can report it too VOSA
who will take it up,
A friend of mine bought a car from a secondhand car dealer who will remain nameless for now , they had just put a new mot on it, on inspection there where several faults that I reckon should have failed it, She contacted VOSA they told her of a nearby garage that had a newly qualified mot man and to take it there and get a report, which she did and faults that could have failed it where found, she son had a call from the garage to bring it back and the faults where sorted pronto,

In fairness, my experience has been mostly with car places. perhaps they've jaded my view slightly! lol

I would always choose an independant over a large chain though. Pays to build a good relationship with your MOT mechanic.
