better acceleration...

Post by ZX6Rich »

Ok llandow showed me that the sv needs more grunt out of the bends b4 he goes back again in a fortnight and after the sensible ideas of NOS turbos and new bikes I'm onto the boring ones of sprockets bit can never remember which way they go more teeth on the front for better acceleration or more on the back?

Any other non money hungry ways also greatly received :D

Off the front and on to the rear increase acceleration. I wouldn't go any more than one off the front.

It's roughly 3 on the rear equals 1 off the front. Too may require a longer chain, also it'll reduce your top speed, so dont go to crazy else it'll be topping out at 100MPH

Cheapest would be a front sprocket with a tooth less, only cost about £15, easy to fit and wont require a new chain.

I didnt watch you ride, but the SV650 isnt a slow bike, especially around a small track like Llandow. I'm sure you could get more speed by carrying more corner speed and getting on the power earlier.

Lower front and more on rear equals acceleration, more on front and less on rear equals more top end, standard SV650 set up is 15/44 for your S model lowest on the front is 14. Front sprockets are 14, 15, 16, 17. Rear ones are 42, 44, 45, 46, 47, 48, 49.

Gear ratio charts, lower ratio more top speed, higher means more get up and go
Teeth 14 15 16 17
42 3.00 2.80 2.62 2.47
44 3.14 2.93 2.75 2.59
45 3.21 3.00 2.81 2.65
46 3.29 3.07 2.88 2.71
47 3.36 3.13 2.94 2.76
48 3.43 3.20 3.00 2.82
49 3.50 3.27 3.06 2.88

Whats the point in having a powerful sports bike for the road, then using a less powerful commuter with jelly suspension for the track :!:

Why not wait?

That was first time on the track. Your riding style changes from road to track. That was first time. We saw lots of first timers riding like still on the road. Give it another go as it is and see what happens. Don't forget you are on a sports Tourer, you won't keep up with sports 600's first time out with a slower bike.

The track record there for years and years was held by a tzr 250. You think he had much power ? Or more experience ?

My CBR6RR has 1 off the front and 3 on the rear, speedo showed 179 flat out but yesterday on the dyno showed a flat out speed of 137, thats how much difference it will make. It did pick up really quickly on the 4th gear runs though which is what you want on track

I've got a zx6r road bike, but for the track I have an old FZr 600, no power, no ground clearance, but big grins, especially when I get to go around the outside of newer, faster bikes :)): , ok so I get mullered down the straights, but I have fun, and isn't that what its supposed to be about? :-bd
For what its worth one down at the front should improve pickup, and you shouldn't need a new chain.

Speaking as his spanner monkey he's thinking about one less on the front, I have mentioned that track riding comes with practice and you will get quicker the more you do it. Just remember Rich, don't do too much too soon.
