Track bikes, NO V5
After the opinion of some of the experienced track bike buyers and sellers out there! All the track bikes im looking at on ebay seem to come without a V5 are they still safe to buy or am I best keeping away? Why would they not have a V5 in the first place?

Re: Track bikes, NO V5
haha why do you think ?
Some are genuine bikes, some are stolen
i bought a ZX10 from a BSB team without a V5 and was told to not bother applying for a V5 as it was a american model that was bought by them for winter testing so no import duty paid, if i registered it i would then have been liable for it. Thats probably one of the few genuine reasons that some bikes dont come with one.
The majority will be stolen recovered or cat C/D damaged bikes that have been bought back from salvage and turned it into a track bike.
a few years ago it never used to be a problem but this year the london cops turned up at brands and took away 17 bikes which didnt have v5s and were either stolen or bodge jobs so it pays to be safe now. Just coz it doesnt have one doesnt mean you shouldnt buy one though

Deej is pretty much spot on. I assume you can complete a HPI check on a frame number? if so, make sure you do that so see if it was stolen etc.
I heard new ZX6R's make good track bikes

also check the engine numbers as if theyre invisible/missing/ground off thats another area of concern and one a aware policeman may pick up on.DynaMight wrote:Deej is pretty much spot on. Re: Track bikes, NO V5
Mine was a cat b write off, due to slight elongation of the lock stop holes in the frame. There was absolutely no damage to the bike, and only the last 3 digits of the frame number have been removed, all other marks are there, available to be checked.
Just make suer you do your checks, and there is no more risk in buying a bike with no V5.

My bike has just been sold with noo v5, but all the frame and engine numbers were in place.
Definitely get things HPI'd if I was you.

Re: Track bikes, NO V5
Buying a bike with no V5 is no real problem as long as you know what your looking for. Dont touch anything that has had its frame/engine numbers either removed or tampered with!! Just because a bike may be cat B, C or D there is still no reason why the numbers would be removed.
At the end of the day, its a buyers market out there, wait for the right bike to turn up that has a V5
