Xr 400 1999
Hi there i have just purchased a 1999 xr 400 and its puzzling me, its starts fine and ticks over but when i try to rev it it dies on me, but when i go to full choke and back to choke off a few times it clears and revs up, and when its revved up its fine ?????? Any idea what it is ? , i thought maybe fuelling or air but im not sure, it is standard bike with no mods ? thanks lee

Sounds like you're taking the choke off too soon, these are 2 stage, fully up to start, once it starts getting too rich then drop choke lever to 1st position, ride off & turn off completely a couple hundred yards later.
XR's don't like big handfulls of throttle from low revs, just check other things - air-filter in place properly & clean/oiled? Also check that the choke flap is still on the spindle correctly - they have been known to break off.
One final thought, has it been jetted to run without the very small baffle & this baffle has been put back in again for MOT?
