If the need to carry a HV vest is enough to stop you taking a bike to France, one of the most pro-bike countries in Europe, then there's not much hope, is there

One thing I do note is the requirement for reflective helmet stickers. My helmet is approved to CE standards, and is therefore legal for sale throughout Europe. In the same way that my motorcycle is manufactured to European standards, and meets the legal requirements for use in this country and can therefore be legally ridden in any other European country. I therefore question whether they can legally force me to apply additional items to meet their (internal/national) standards, that are not required in my (EU) country of origin? Especially if only on a short visit? As that law has been around for donkeys years, and never enforced, I doubt it will ever be an issue.

It's also probably like the breathalyser thing - technically illegal not to have them, but no penalty if you don't .......

The hi-viz thing is a good idea and the French do actually wear them when broken down - stating the obvious, they can be seen from quite a distance. Almost feel it should be enforced in the UK - already have one in the corner of my boot (I know the froggies want them reachable from inside).

How about a Devon/Cornwall shape SWB reflective sticker covering the appropriate area size?

My Roof Boxer lid (which is Frence made) came with reflective stickers with the handbook - I cut the KTM logo out of one & actually stuck it on my lid! Still surprised that no-one makes Arai/Shoei or even Honda/Suzuki reflective lid stickers.

On an off-roading holiday in Spain in 2009, four of our party were tugged in the local town by the Guardia Civil and relived of €105 apiece for the crime of not having mirrors fitted to our off-road bikes. When I pointed out to one of the coppers that they were off-road bikes he said "yes, but you're on the road now". Needless to say we've since found cheap folding mirrors to fit to the bikes to keep them off our backs when we're out there, and haven't been tugged since, though we have made a point of keeping as much distance between them and us as we can.
Internet research after returning home in 2009 yielded the minimum requirements for riding in Spain - a licence, a helmet and a headlight - not a word about mirrors...

I done lots of driving in Europe and only ever got pulled once in Austria with a 28foot caravan on the back on the car at 2 in morning. They tried to get money which I agreed if they could give a written receipt. They refused so I suggested we take it back to the station for me to pay. He went off and apparently rang his Sargent at home at 2am who said let me off with a warning! Yeah bollocks

So moral to this is get a receipt as rumour has it the money doesn't always end up back at the yard!

A few of us did nuringburg a few years ago some got pulled by the law 100 euros for anything they could find (no baffles, not carrying mot/insurance ect) had to be cash no receipt nearly 3 grand in total , didn't see another cop all weekend says it all

I was in Panamá for nearly a year. I was told never to take my UK driving licence with me as it could well get 'taken to the police station' and not seen again.
Further, to be EXTREMELY careful in the run up to Xmas. Pale peeps get stopped for next to nothing (or nothing) and fined. You pay or go the the nick, and you REALLY didn't want to do that with Maggie in the Falklands.

The only thing I'm having trouble with is getting my beret to stay attached to my helmet? The strings of onions and baguettes are ok, I've got good bungee points ;) ..............................
