What size number plate do you run with?

Post by Jug »

If you have changed your plate.. what size plate do you now run?

I had previously trimmed down my existing legal one (9x7) to approx 8.5" x 6" but it looks a bit odd now so I'm planning to replace it.
I initially intended to get a new one that was 8" x 6" but on my tourer the plate is just 7" x 5" and to this date that one has not attracted any unwanted attention..

So.. what do you think, what size plate do you feel comfortable with?

Have you noticed that anyone going slower than you is an idiot, and anyone going faster is a maniac ?

It has never even crossed my tiny little mind to change a normal legal plate.

Can't think of a reason.

Got to say that not done anything with the number plate before but with my previous bike the loud exhaust and speed was enough to draw the attention of the old bill so didn't want to go for anything smaller although i do think it looks better.

This is small. I did check with an ANPR manufacturer and they said their equipment would read it and almost everything.

But that still contravenes the reg's Dave.
I have stupid little 7" x 5" plates on my bikes and have not been pulled; though I ride like a saint so do not draw attention

Of course it contravenes the regs, but as an ANPR will read it, it is from a human perspective, safe to use.

I too ride like a saint and try to keep the throttle very low on the open pipes

I had a chat with my MOT guy a couple of years back and he told me pretty much the same, that the guidance they'd received is that their cameras (I'm assuming ANPR) was having no issues so as testers they can relax on reduced size number plates.

A standard size plate on the back on my SD looks daft, the 7x5's looks nice and although is tempting I think it does look very obviously small.

Pretty sure mines an 7x5, being a side plate the legal size looks ridiculously huge and gets broken constantly by people brushing passed it

7" x 6" on mine. Allows legal height digits (just).

Legal size plates are ok on grandad bikes, but always look shite on pretty much any bike you'd actually want to own, in my experience

I used t run a fairly small plate on one particular bike, and the only complaint I received was that it was positioned too flat, rather than its size ..... and the plate size was 8" x 1.5"

Nowadays, a number plate no wider than the rear tyre works best, I think :-bd
