For what it's worth I had a similar issue last year changing the ignition on Wendy's street triple. Modern tamper proof snap bolts are designed not to be removed. In the end I had them cleanly drilled out by local engineering firm Hamlin's in Bridgwater. You will have to remove whatever the ignition is secured to which potentially will be a chunk of work.

Most modern bikes as well as tamper proof bolts have the ignition programmed to the ECU this is either a main dealer job or specialist who can crack your ECU.

I would suggest a conversation with Neil Pearson at NP in Taunton if you don't want to tackle the job yourself.

Or get someone to look at it.

Depending on your mechanical ability it may seem like brain surgery when it's actually just a case of removing a splinter.

I agree, if you feel able to do the mechanical bit then have a go. Unless the ecu and the physical lock 'broke' at exactly the same time, which as they're not connected, is highly unlikely then it is very unlikely that it's electrical related problem. Again i will say the physical mechanics and the electrical bits are separate. If you do it yourself don't forget to regularly use plenty of lube to prevent it happening again.

Easy to remove using a automatic centre punch or drill and torx socket or multispline.

Worst bit will be dropping the top yoke off with the steering lock still on. You may end up dropping the stations out the yokes to get the angle to remove easier.

As said the coding on an 09 will just be in the ecu and will just be the reader that may be replaced when the ignition barrel gets replaced.

If the ignition barrel is replaced it will require a new key pattern, and the chip in the new key will not be compatible with the ECU.... if the OP has the red key it will be possible to clone the chip code to a new virgin key (if I recall it can programme a total of five keys, including the red one and the two original black ones that the bike came with as new, so you can get two new keys cut and chipped) and the new virgin key will need cutting to match the new ignition lock barrel pattern.
I’ll have a look for the details of the company that restored my barrel after being superglued.

Or strip the ignition barrels and replace the plates into the same pattern as the old one that way dont have to change the keys?

To every problem there is multiple solutions.

I had to change the ignition on my 07 zx10r as it wore and the key popped out somewhere around mallory park.

After looking at the plug on it I found that the ignition was the same as the zx7r.

£20 later instead of £160 and half an hour with the tools and job done.

Thanks for all the replies. I've spoken to quite a few people about it now... think I'm going to take the job on myself and take the lock off. Hopefully I'll be able to get another key coded to my ECU if the lock needs replacing. If not, then it'll probably be a whole kit.

I spoke to a locksmith who may be able to help once I've got the lock out, hopefully he'll be able to clone me a new key! I'll post back here when I have some news, thanks again!
