A great sign I saw on french roads a few years ago was saying the cause of many accidents is "inattention"

Very true, it's the rapid deceleration resulting in a stop that kills you, not the speed.

Ha ha very smart.... (and scientifically factual)
The point I am trying to make is doing 70mph on a motorway does not guarantee you are safe if you are not observing the road and pre-empting the dangers ahead. Just in the same way as somebody doing 90mph fully alert is probably safer then somebody doing 70 half asleep and looking at their phone. Hence speed by itself does not kill but lack of attention will.

So maybe the answer is to speed up?
Try to cut straight through the car without it slowing you down too much.

Perhaps it would be useful that no one is even allowed to apply for a car licence until they have done 12 months on a moped. That'll raise awareness pretty bloody sharpish.

Agreed - followed by a spell with a decent driver in an HGV, so's they can have confirmed just how poor the driving standards of the average car driver really are, how this impacts on other road users, and hopefully learn something.
