Hi. I'm completely new...

Post by washmycactus »

Hi,

I thought I'd sign up with you lot as I'm in the South West so eventually I'd like to meet up.

First things first though. I know nothing about bikes, but I want to learn. I've never ridden but I've been on the back of a friends bike (scared the hell out of me but isn't everything scary the first time?). I want to do something new with my life and learning to ride seems like an interesting challenge.

So, where do I start? As I said, I know nothing about bikes so I'd be grateful for any info, no matter how basic. I have a friend with a CB125T who would probably lend it (and possibly sell it) to me, so I can get my hands on a bike. If it makes any difference I'm female, 34, and 4ft 10 in small and I've only had my car licence since October (I'm hoping being a biker will make me a better driver, too). I have a bit (but not too much) cash to spend so I want to equip myself with a basic but good quality kit.

Thanks for your help. Looking forward to getting on two wheels. :D

Well first of all Welcome to the site :D ,

Secondly, good gear is a wise investment :D

Where abouts are you - folks nearer to your base maight be able to advise the best places to buy from, training centre's etc., ..... The CB125T would be quite a good starter bike, but I'd imagine getting your feet to the ground might become an issue with many bikes

There's plenty of Ladies (male and female   ) on here, so you should get some good advice :D
Of all the things I have ever lost, I miss my mind the most .....

Handle stressful situations like a dog - If you can't eat it or play with it, pee on it and walk away

Hiya :D

Welcome to the forum

The first thing you need to do is your CBT which is valid for 2 years, I'm not sure where you are but use this link >>> http://www.dsa.gov.uk/AtoZATBInfo.asp?letter=A&CAT=295 to find approved trainers in your area...

If you find one ask them if they do a free assessment, they will give you about an hour to see how you like it and then book you in for your CBT, you won't have to have a bike at that point as they will supply you with the bike and all the kit.

Once you complete the CBT you can either get your own bike and ride it around for two years on L plates or go for your bike test, you will need to do your theory and hazard perception before you take your pratical...

Probably an sr125 would suit you for your bike training as it is low in height, they will try and take your height into consideration when deciding which bike to put you on.

There are two tests which you could do, an A2 which is a restricted test (to 33bhp for two years), you will do the practical test on a 125cc

or DAS (practical on something like a gs500) which means you can ride any bhp straight after passing your practical.

I'm 5' 3 and took an A2 practical test on a SR125, bought a CB600 and rode it restricted to 33bhp for two years, it's been lowered quite a bit, if you are anywhere near Plymouth you are welcome to have a sit on it to see what you think 8)

Hi there, welcome to the site :D

If you go the das route they probably won't have a bike small enough for you, i struggled with the 500 when it came to putting my feet down (realised this after dropping the thing on myself after a U turn :? ) Ended up back on a 125 and restricted license. Got a 400 now and feet are flat on the floor, go to a bike shop and sit on a few. I'm 5'3" but my mate is 5' and can also get feet flat.

Above all, if you do your test, remember you have a car so this is purely for fun and enjoy it :D
