Somewhere new
I did an IAM skills day yesterday which although I've been an advanced rider for years Isn't my kind of thing. There was one huge draw. It was held on the Thruxton racing circuit which as far as I know doesn't allow bike track days and very few race meetings. The theory side was 6 twenty minute sessions that could have been covered in about 5 minutes, along with 6 twenty minute track sessions. The first 4 sessions all had to be riden within your group of 5 including your instructor, but the last two were classed as 'un supported" riding where overtaking was allowed as long as it was done off the line they had been getting you to use. Fortunately I had a lovely young lady instructor who enjoys her track days so the last two sessions turned into a well behaved game of cat and mouse . They had stated a 90 mph speed limit but this was soon ignored. So was it worth doing from a learning point probably not but made worthwhile by being able to ride Thruxton.

Re: Somewhere new
I spoke to a copper a few years back and he said the non track trackday was the best bit about the IAM these days. Plus, like you said, Thruxton is not even on the radar as far as playdays are allowed.

So all in all then, and excepting the riding Thruxton bit, it seems it was a questionable way for your average Joe to spend time and money.

Re: Somewhere new
I've been offered various ones over the years but only did this one for where it was being held. Had many discussions with observers who preech how to ride when they're behind you, and are as bad if not worse when you follow them.

Cheers
. You've confirmed my long held suspicion that IAM- type courses aren't for everyone. That suspicion was formed years ago when I was enviegled into attending an 'Advanced Rider' taster session . I rapidly came to the conclusion that it wasn't for me.

There are good advanced groups out there. I ride with Avon Advanced motorcycle Club they do ROSPA training if you want it but don't force it on anyone. Certainly not shy at letting the horses loose when roads and conditions are favourable.
