k+n air filter may have buggered up my bike. HELP NEEDED!

hi, had a new k+n air filter installed. now my bike is EXTREMELY insane.
its a bitch to start in the morning. and regularly the bike dies for no apparent reason. happened TWICE on the dual carriage way home today.

seriously pissed off and worried.
it was fitted by gtmotorcycles in paignton. i fear they might have buggered the fitting.

please any advice.

judging by the pic its a cbr 125? possibly sucking in too much air and needs setting up properly to run on non standard parts? perhaps the carbs needs balancing etc?

Graham at gt's is usually pretty good. I would say you need your carb set up correctly, I think watters is correct it's sucking in too much air.

To be honest you'd get negligable results putting a K+N on the CBR125. Go back and ask him to set it up for you, it should only cost you an hours labour.

Either that or get in touch with Dynamight on here. He has a carbtune, set my R6 up and when it was Dyno'd dynomap said it was fuelling perfectly...

It sounds like it needs re jetting or the like. new filter allows faster air flow.

thanks for the replies.

going to try take it to gt tomorrow.
i let the bike cool down and it seemed to start without TOO much trouble.
is it possible that the bike might have over flooded. because the fuel-air mixture is quite rich at the moment; and taking it to high revs could flood the engine ?

Fitting the more free flowing filter allows more air into the chamber so i doubt that Flooding is your problem unless you have repetitively kept trying to start it with the throttle open...

it's a good idea you get graham to have a look at it again.

the fuelings and air mixture is probably wrong as i doubt you paid for it to be rejetted when the filter was fitted,its not so simple as just changing filters and away you go

no i didn't pay for re jetting.
to be honest the chaps at gt should have mentioned this to me before i bought the filter and before they fitted it.

Righto lads time for a news update.

took the bike to gt, amazingly it started with only once nearly dieing on the journey. the gentleman in the workshop who originally fitted the air filter assured me that nothing was wrong. did a quick inspection of the bike: found nothing at fault.

told him that service time is nearly upon us and told him that i would like a service. booked that in, sorted.

asked him what can i do now, at this point in time, to solve the problem, he wasn't really sure, he did mention to me that usually air filters go hand in hand with an after market exhaust as more free flowing air in has less of a struggle coming out of after market system opposed to the stock exhaust.

asked him: "but what can i do now". he said about the spark plug might be knacked. looked at it and it seemed to be worn. put a new plug in and it has never started that smoothly in a long time, and this appears for the time being to have solved the problem

he assured me that true air filters increase air flow but not enough to bugger the system on my small engine, but a new exhaust will make a big improvement, which is a future investment later on in life.

now a word to all the chaps who replied to this topic.
Thanks, i did not expect so much help in such little space of time you were all a big help in my time of panic.

i mean if any of you had to push your bike home for about 3/4 of a mile you too would be worried for why your bike didn't start. admittedly my bike is only ~130kg which wasn't too bad.

Those honda engines hate dodgy spark plugs. My old cg used to refuse to run at times when the plug was bad.

Too be honest mate, i had a CBR125 and I wouldn't invest in an aftermarket can etc. I'd put the money towards doing your test as the power improvements aren't noticable.

Always use the correct NGK plug i found this out years ago, my fs1e would not run anymore than 10 miles on a champion plug, melted a bosch one, the RD,s do not like anything other than NGK,s, and beleive it or not my MK1 escort was a pig to start and ran on sometimes after switching off unless fitted with NGK.s and replace em rgular especially the R type resistor ones
