After the last rideout I am seriously thinking about heated grips 
but really not sure about having the muffs on the bike

That is CHEAP! 
I've seen the muffs cost that on their own. In fact it's so cheap I would be sceptical about the quality of the heated grips. 
As to riding with the muffs I've used them for several years My hands suffer in realy cold weather & the muffs do a great job of keeping the wind chill off the back of my hands.
