First Bike suggestions....

Post by St.George »

Right then

Got me test all booked up, now just the small matter of choosing what bike to treat myself to. I've got my heart set on a CBR 600 but my head is telling me Bandit / Hornet / SV.

Read in a few magazines now that the latter mentioned above are excellent first bikes - reasonable insurance, reliable, quite forgiving etc etc.

However, I know a couple of people who have had CBR's and haven't got a bad word to say about them. I love the styling of them, especially the front end the underseat exhaust looks great aswell. hmmmm, decisions decisions

Looking at '05 / 06 plate onwards ideally.

Would love to hear suggestions from anyone who has owned or does own any of the mentioned bikes and get a feel for what people think. Let us know what your first bike was aswell........ :?

RS125  only smocking
how about a tlr1000?

Now seriously
400s are good starting bikes,
although there are better starter 600 bikes like hornets, bandits.

Get a vfr/rvf 400.

Don't get an SV for a first bike otherwise you will hooked onto v-twins when most bikes are il4s!
Blue Sv650s Curvey - Now unrestricted but starting to find the suspension a problem.
Next bike: CBR600RR eventually.

Cheers for the advice on the SV Ricky.

Didn't really consider a 400 either but there's been a couple of suggestions already so will bare it in mind :)

To be honest mate your best of getting your test out of the way and the right kit coz it don't matter if it's a 400 / Bandit / SV / R6 it hurts just the same when you fall off if you haven't got the right kit on.

Also i wouldn't be overly worried about getting something that you think is not a 'wise' first bike, I went for the GSXR knowing that the throttle is analogue rather than on / off digital and have gone on to tour europe, commute in the snow and have the biggest grin throwing it round the track.

It's all about how you ride, not what you ride, a well riden CCMsuper moto showed me that last week :D

Either way best decision you ever made booking up that test 8)

hard to say really, what is it that you are after out of your bike?

gentle cruise to learn ya lines ?

out for a thrash at warp speed ?

all rounder ?

then there are the other things

how tall are you ? - no good a small 400 if you are a lanky sod

chunky monkey or beanpole? - weight has a bearing on how the bike performs - ask jay

how old are you ?

younger you are + fast bike = generally higher insurance

do you want a shiney bike that odds on will get dropped as its your first ?

whatever you get you will enjoy it, i think until you can answer the first question you can't start down the route of choosing a bike.

i'll echo what billinom8s says, especially your size and what you want the bike to do for you

if its a 600 sportsbike your after it comes down to cosmetics as any of the manufacturers produce bikes outside our capabilities
