hydraulic clutch brokened...........

Post by scorcher »

Lost my clutch on my 990 SMT today, just about managing to get a bit if I pumped fast at a few junctions. On inspection back home it was oily up on the bars around the master cylinder, so figured it might want some new internals which I can get tomorrow if required. However I figured I might aswell bleed it whilst I was there messing to see if I could get my clutch back and see if I could see where it was weeping from.

Removed the cover and there was plenty of oil in the resevoir.Bled it through and quite a bit of air was in there. Got a nice clutch again there for now. However, everytime i squeezed the clutch lever a little bubble of air was coming back up through the pipe and into the res. So I'm now thinking the oil is being forced through the cylinder cover rubber. Any ideas where/why I'm getting that little bubble coming back up into the res. Presuming its not normal!

Mr Smiler seems to think it may be the seals in the clutch cylinder thats causing your bubbles...he has a spare in the garage and also the mineral oil if you need it. Get in touch if thats any use to you Matt :D

Yep, as Ant says, have a look at the slave cylinder drawing in air ....

Slave was repaced about 10k miles ago wth an Oberon unit.Looks like theres some seals there that are the same as the originals. These should of been replaced with new ones supplied by Oberon although I never done the job so don't know whether they were or not. Looking at the online microfiche the seals only seem to come as part of the complete slave kit. Going to Fowlups for brunch so will see if their parts guys can come up with anything. If not I might have to take up Mr Smilers kind offer. :-bd

Took the cheap option and done bugger all :)): . Pumped the lever as many times as I could in the garage until my arms fell off and still had a plenty of pressure so that will do for now. Did notice that by just wiggling the free play on the lever I was getting air back into the master cylinder so i'm still thinking its a problem with seals on the master rather than the slave. I'll see how it goes and if I've still got it in 9 days ,i'll spend some money on it :)):

Did you reverse bleed the clutch or bleed it like you would breaks?

A final bleed from the nipple on the master cylinder helps restore lever pressure.

Was going to say it's the slave cylinder but as you've replaced it you've already sorted that (they do fail).
