Re: Sprockets
Yep, front down back up for more acceleration, .
Ususally down 1 front up 2 rear to start with,
Look at stunt bikes, massive rear sprocket for control not speed,

Don't know which way you going or how far you are intending to go with the gearing but don't forget to consider chain length and the amount of adjustment left. Otherwise you will need a longer chain or add links if gearing down.
1 tooth on or off the back of my blade requires about 3-3.5 turns on the adjuster, if yours are on the same pitch thread. And the bike handles quicker with a shorter wheelbase, as well as lifting the front unless you lengthen the wheel base. Or vice versa if going the other way.

Re: Sprockets
I was 1 down and 1 up but wasn't necessary. 1 down on from is approx 2 half up on back. I've gone to 1 down on front and back to stock on back
Re: Sprockets
I have 2 teeth on the front and 3 at the back
because I havent changed it for a while :_D

Re: Sprockets
Personally, and dependant on chain size and sprocket teeth as standard, I wouldn't drop teeth off the front ......
Reducing sprocket teeth on the front puts the chain through additional stress turning the tighter radius, creates noise, and wears chain buffers. Ideally you want sprockets to be as even in diameter as possible to minimise wear and effect on suspension - though clearly that isn't possible for a number of reasons.

Re: Sprockets
No, not saying that, just that like any other changes doing so has an impact on other things. What are the standard sprockets for the bike? I personally wouldn't drop below 15/16t for a front sprocket with a 520/530 chain from my experience with my bikes - other bikes might be different though .....MW2K8 wrote:So basically don't fanny around with sprockets, just buy a faster 'bike...

Re: Sprockets
By going bigger on the rear sprocket rather than down on the front also gives very slightly better rotational leverage.
However, it normally works out adding 3 teath at rear is equal to going down 1 tooth at the front & usually requires a longer chain. Whereas 1 down on the front you can usually adjust out.

Re: Sprockets
I recently dropped one tooth at the front, but it hasn't made any real difference apart from putting my chain closer to its full adjustment length. I'm now trying to decide do I go up 2 at the rear or just go back to standard gearing? Not sure if my acceleration is already good enough for my road use and will I just be wasting money searching for more? Hmmmmmm .........
