"Random" Police Stops

Post by blindside666 »

In only roughly 4-5 months of riding!
First time of course I had a tail light out.

This time however, I was doing NOTHING wrong.
Had the girlfriend on the back, we'd just had a nice Toby Carvery in Exeter and made our way back, coming into Exeter (funny enough opposite the bus lane I was worried about) Mr Plod puts the blues and twos on and pulls us over, Girl hops off and I sit there shaking a little wondering what I could have possibly done wrong, I wasn't speeding, the bike was in working order, I didn't overtake anything or break any of the rules of the road.

He then tells me that they've been hammered recently with reports on stolen bikes, does a check on my bike and gets really suspicious of the fact I have no license, then I make it clear I've passed my test only a few days ago. They just tell me that if I'm riding 2 up on a small bike, I'm bound to be stopped. I'm like ... okay  and they let me go on my way.

I ring my Dad and we discuss and think, isn't that a bit [Censored] prejudice!? Just cos I'm on a smaller bike with a pillion, doesn't mean I nicked it? The fact my full biking gear matches the bike as well should tell them it is in fact mine. What do you guys think of this situation?

Also be warned if this is the case they seem to just be randomly stopping Bikers to check documents.

By those first two lines I was reffering to the fact it was my second run in with the cops in just a couple months. And I haven't been doing anything wrong =[

You are on a 125 with a pillion and they're mostly ridden by people with CBT's - I am not surprised he stopped you, especially if you have just passed and it isn't showing up on their systems yet.

*Even more of an incentive to get rid of the damn thing and hurry up and buy a bigger bike*
He seemed to know about bikes, using biker phrases such as 2UP and other things, and briefly talking about the steering lock pin and how people are breaking them. So I guess that would be his reason, he knew it was a 125 and knows the score with people.
Ah well, I'm perfectly legal =]

sometimes the cops can be a pain, sometimes not.

maybe he saw the two of you on a small bike and thought it was unsafe, dunno, was always advised against taking pillion when i had a 125

Could be.

I am however a sensible man =]
Gave the bike a full going over before going to pick her up. Tyre Pressure & Suspension changed accordingly and the bikes had alot of work to ti since I've got it with the aim being to increase safety & performance for pillions, as 125s aren't great!
It does still struggle.

I do feel obliged to say that the chap I was chatting to, while the other cop carried out the checks was very nice about it all once he realized I was starting to freak out abit. He explained the situation and even picked up my wallet for my when I dropped it thumbing through for ID *shakey hands* lol
I suppose at the end of the day, they are just doing their job!

try to think of it in a good way, in that if a couple of kids did nick you bike, at least theres a chance of the police stopping them because they looked suspicious, i used to get stopped a lot in kent after finishing night shifts, just because there were a lot of car thefts in the area and they were doing random checks, best to just shrug it off and think well at least there doing something to stop bike thefts.

I'm going with the others, probably pulled you over because you were two up on a 125 with no L plates, not realising you were fully legal. Well done for you and missus both wearing all your gear etc though mate.

I'd get suspicious if it does keep happening though and would even make a complaint.

yeah, i'd rather be pulled over for no reason and have a couple guys get caught nicking bikes. Its a pain but at least it shows they actually do their job occasionally
