R1 clutch?

Post by GIXXER KID »

hey guys, clutch is slipping pretty bad on my 1999 R1, it was dragging abit and i was sat in traffic when it over heated and expanded, resulting in it always being engaged, once it cooled down it was fine but slipping like mad.

Ive been advised to change from the diaphram spring to the 6 coil spring type, does anyone else suggest this?
Also whats the best clutch plates to go for, been looking at ebc and barnett ones, and is it recomended to change the friction and metal plates? or is it worth just changing the friction plates.

ive had my clutch out and the plates have loads of life left in them so im unsure why its slipping,

anyone had this problem? im a tad confused and what ive typed above may be abit hard to make sense off

basically the clutch is slipping, whats the best idea for replacing it, it needs to be able to take some abuse

i had a similar problem, if you give it a handful, it would pull for a few thousand and then rev out but no acceleration. i thought that the clutch had gone, turned out to be the clutch cable was too tight. backed it off and went for a 'spin' under load it still did it, backed it off another turn etc etc. not had to touch it in over 18 months now.

try that before you go blowing a shed load on a new clutch.

I have just replaced everything on my GSXR1100L, I was told EBC friction plates are good to use but nothing else, buy genuine steel plates and diaphram springs, new gasket job done.

ive changed the cable cus mine was sticking, ive made sure theres enough slack in the cable so its not that,

its fine untill you get to about 8000rpm, second gear wheelies are a no go, soon as you get on the power it slips and revs.

to give you an idea if i get on the power ill only get 65 in 1st and 90 in second.

i was told the diapram springs are well known for going to shit so dunno if whilst im at it should spend £115 on the barnett conversion kit.

the clutch in the bike now is a heavy duty one so was gunna keep the metal drive plates and just get some more heavy duty friction plates, someone suggested cleaning the friction plates up with emery cloth as they have loads of material left on them :?:

striped out the clutch again today and had a look, discovered the diaphram spring had warped from the heat, fitted a new one and yay it works again :D
