Yeah water logging was a big problem with a lot of the old SVs. Shame SV650.org is down otherwise you woulda been able to find a lot more information on it. Try svrider.com and have a look on the forums there a lot of the guys from sv650 frequent there too.

does the neutral light work? If theirs no neutral light its your main fuse, most likely a 15a.

even if the starter died it wud not of cut your bike out.. Check your plug, and HT lead as well..

If your unlucky could be your coil.

it woudln't explain why it cut out but have a look at the electrics behind your starter switch. They went on my last bike, bit of rewiring and it worked fine agian.

Can you describe the what happened? because if the plugs really really sh*t high it will cut out.

Check the fuses
Bypass any cutouts - sidestand switch / kill switch
Sounds like one of those is cutting your electrics.
Plugs / coil / petrol will not stop the starter from working
