Interesting for me too and I'm well pleased I took the short route. I've taken the kids for a short pootle on the back before, but never a fully fledged, experienced adult pillion, who tries to help.
We did have a couple of problems. She couldn't get on or off the bike without a ledge, bank, rock, or kerb to stand on. Except once. Sweeping left-hander to the junction of the Barnstaple road. As I stopped behind a car at the junction, I lost the bike and lowered it very gently to the ground, having hit the kill-switch. So she managed to crawl out from under it that time.
We managed to take the 'interesting' route to the pub. Narrow, one vehicle country lanes and about 5 turn-offs. I started to lose my nerve a bit, so when we got to a very steep give-way and right turn, I suggested my pillion got off, but there wasn't anywhere for her to get off to, so I gave it welly and managed it.
On the way back my pillion navigator got something in her eye and inadertently signalled a left turn to me. A demented grasshopper with waving arms on the back seat and I guessed I'd gone the wrong way. Fortunately one roundabout later and we were back on track.
Have to admit, the 'drop' did amazing things for my observation and planning. All the way back and no stopping until a red light on Exe Bridges.
I felt like I'd blasted 700 miles, instead of pootled 120. Phew.
Next year I'll take the long route with everyone else. Anyone want a spare pillion?
